How to Prepare Your Home for a Flooring Install in a Minnesota Winter

A smooth flooring install starts well before the crew arrives. A little preparation saves hours of work, keeps your project on schedule and protects your belongings. In Minnesota, winter adds one more variable: the materials themselves need time to adjust to your home. Here is a practical checklist built around how projects really go in Twin Cities houses, condos and townhomes.

Start With the Estimate Visit

Prep begins at the free in-home estimate. We measure each room, look at the existing floor and the subfloor, and note stairs, transitions and anything that will need moving. Because we bring our samples to you, you can decide on materials and talk through scheduling in the same visit. Be sure to mention pets, nap schedules, working-from-home hours and any date you are working toward, such as a holiday gathering.

Furniture and Belongings

The less in the room, the faster the work goes. We recommend moving the following before install day:

  • Small items, decor, rugs, wall hangings near the baseboards and anything fragile.
  • Contents of closets and the floor of any room being redone.
  • Lightweight furniture to a room that is not being worked on that day.
  • Cords, pet bowls and kids' toys from hallways the crew will use.

Heavy pieces such as pianos, sectionals, gun safes and large bookshelves are best discussed ahead of time. Let us know early so we can plan the right help.

Removing the Old Floor

Old carpet, tile, vinyl and wood all come out differently, and disposal is part of the job. We handle floor demolition and prep so you do not have to rent a dumpster or haul debris yourself. Tell us about anything you suspect is hidden, like multiple layers or glued-down material, so the quote reflects reality.

Subfloor: The Part You Cannot See

A floor is only as good as what is under it. We check for squeaks, dips, moisture and loose boards. On concrete slabs and basements, moisture testing matters, especially after wet springs when the freeze-thaw cycle pushes water toward foundations. Minor leveling and repairs are normal in older Twin Cities homes. Bigger repairs get discussed and priced before work starts. You can read more about our flooring installation process.

Acclimation in a Minnesota Winter

Wood and some other materials expand and contract with temperature and humidity. If planks are stored in a cold garage or a delivery truck and installed right away in a warm house, they can move after the fact. Acclimation means letting the material sit in the space where it will be installed so it reaches the same conditions as the home.

MaterialWinter acclimation guidance
Solid hardwoodTypically several days or more inside the house, with the heat on at normal living temperature
Engineered hardwoodUsually shorter, follow the manufacturer's instructions
Luxury vinyl plankOften 24 to 48 hours at room temperature
LaminateCommonly 48 hours or more, per manufacturer
Carpet and tileMinimal, though cold material is harder to work with

These are general ranges. We follow each manufacturer's written requirements for the specific product we install. Keep the house at a normal, steady temperature before, during and after the work, and consider a humidifier in dry winter months.

Building a Realistic Timeline

Timing depends on room count, material and prep needs. A single bedroom of carpet may take a day, while a whole main level of hardwood takes several. Winter weather can also affect delivery. We will give you a schedule at the estimate and update you if anything shifts. For larger jobs, ask about phasing room by room so you can keep living in the house.

Day-of Details

  • Clear a path from the driveway to the work area, and shovel and salt steps in snow.
  • Plan for noise and dust, particularly if floors are being removed.
  • Arrange for pets to stay somewhere safe, since open doors and winter do not mix.
  • Keep a point person available for questions, even if you are working from home.

Our crews treat your home with respect and clean up as they go. If you are comparing materials before the big day, see our products overview, or visit the service areas page to confirm we cover your city. Questions? Contact us.
