A tough surface for the busiest steps in the house

A tough surface for the busiest steps in the house

Basement stairs get snowmelt, laundry baskets, and boots every single day, and carpeted steps tend to look tired quickly. Vinyl plank is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet, so it is a smart fit for households with kids, dogs, or a back entry that never stays dry.

TPM Flooring installs vinyl plank stairs around Eagan, MN using the same product as the adjoining floor, so the staircase flows into the rooms at the top and bottom. If you are still deciding on the floor itself, start with our luxury vinyl plank page.

The nosing is what makes it look finished

The nosing is what makes it look finished

A stair job lives or dies at the front edge. Many vinyl lines do not offer a matching nosing, and that is why so many do-it-yourself staircases look like a patch. We use a factory nosing when one exists, or a custom-made piece cut from the same plank when it does not, so the edge matches the tread without a contrasting metal strip.

  • Wear layers sized for heavy household traffic
  • Textured surface that grips better than a smooth finish
  • Click or glue-down methods depending on the product
  • Nosings matched to the plank you choose

Loose treads and thin adhesive cause squeaks and lifting edges. We secure each tread, flatten any dips, and bond the plank with proper adhesive plus hidden fasteners where the manufacturer allows. The goal is a staircase that feels solid underfoot. If your steps are currently wood and you would rather keep that look, see hardwood stairs or carpet stairs for comparison.

Vinyl Flooring Stairs — your questions answered

Stair-rated planks have a textured surface that grips well. If you want extra confidence for little kids or older relatives, say so at the estimate and we will talk through options.

We remove the carpet, pad, tack strip, and staples first, then inspect the treads. Solid treads get leveled and covered. Damaged or particleboard treads are replaced as part of the job.

A squeak usually means a loose tread, so we secure those before laying anything. Done right, the stairs often end up quieter than they were.

With a matching nosing, either from the manufacturer or milled from the same plank, instead of a generic metal strip. See some finished staircases in our project gallery.
